Reuters news agency reported on January 9 that the US called China's new fishing restrictions in disputed waters in the South China Sea "provocative and potentially dangerous".

Speaking at a press conference, US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki stressed: “The adoption of measures to restrict other countries’ fishing activities in disputed waters in the East Sea is a provocative and potentially dangerous act. China has provided no explanation or basis under international law for these wide-ranging maritime claims.”
