A Malaysian maritime official said yesterday that a boat carrying 80 Indonesians sank in southern Malaysian waters due to bad weather and rough seas.

According to a spokesperson for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, three people have been confirmed dead from drowning and eight are missing. Rescue operations are currently underway in the waters off Johor state.

Local media reported that the people on the sunken ship were illegal Indonesian laborers.

Last June, an overloaded boat carrying illegal migrants from Indonesia sank in waters off western Malaysia, killing at least 10 people.
