Bus accident carrying children in China, 11 people died

The accident caused a wave of public anger over the lack of traffic safety for students.

Reuters reported on July 11 that a bus accident in Hunan province killed 11 people, including 8 children.

The incident occurred when a school bus carrying children home crashed into a lake on the afternoon of July 10 on a road near Xiangtan City. The accident killed everyone on board, including two teachers and the driver.

China News Service said the accident site was a narrow dirt road with a mountain on one side and no safety guardrail. All the bodies have been found.

A series of accidents in recent years involving buses carrying children has become a sensitive issue in China.

In April 2014, eight students died in a bus accident in Hainan province during a school trip.

In 2011, 18 kindergarten children also died after a coal truck crashed into a kindergarten vehicle in northwestern China.

The accident forced then-Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to pledge state funds to improve bus safety services for children.
