After a 7-hour journey across the ocean, on the afternoon of February 25th, Qantas Airways flight QF7581, carrying 200 pregnant high-yield cows imported from Australia to Vietnam, landed at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. These are the first of 5,000 pregnant cows that Vinamilk will import from Australia and the United States in 2014.
In the context of increasingly volatile and unstable global milk prices, investing in dairy farms and proactively securing a local supply of fresh milk is a crucial strategic objective and a long-term direction for Vinamilk to improve quality and increase the localization rate of its raw materials.
In 2014 and 2015, Vinamilk will continue to develop and operate four new farms in Tay Ninh (10,000 cows), Ha Tinh (3,000 cows), Thanh Hoa 2 (3,000 cows), and Thong Nhat Farm, Thanh Hoa (20,000 cows). This will bring the total number of Vinamilk's dairy farms to nine, with approximately 46,000 cows, meeting about 40% of the raw milk demand (of which 20% comes from the farms themselves and the remaining 20% from individual farmers). To meet the breeding needs of these farms, Vinamilk will continue to import more than 5,000 breeding cows from Australia and the United States. The first shipment of 200 pregnant high-yield dairy cows from Australia arrived on February 25th, 2014. The remaining cows in the plan will be transported to Vietnam by air when weather conditions are suitable.
Over the years, the excellent results of raising cattle imported from Australia have demonstrated that the application of new technology and ensuring good breeding and care techniques are fundamental factors for raising high-yield imported cattle. The average dairy yield at Vinamilk farms currently reaches over 7,200 kg/cow/year, which is high compared to global cattle yields (equivalent to Europe and higher than farms in Asia). Based on these positive results, Vinamilk has decided to continue importing large quantities of breeding cattle from Australia to rapidly increase the herd size and meet the demand for raw fresh milk for the company's milk processing plants.
