Investigation into the mysterious liquid found in Chinese sandals.
Recently, public opinion in Hanoi has been abuzz about a type of sandal, allegedly originating from China, that contains a strange substance causing itching, burning, and numbness in the feet of users.
Even when the sandals were cut in half, people discovered a yellow liquid with a strong, pungent odor inside. So what is this strange substance in these sandals? Is it just a desiccant, or does it actually pose a danger? A series of questions are being raised by Vietnamese consumers, awaiting answers from the authorities.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao (Cau Dien - Tu Liem - Hanoi) said: “After using these sandals for a very short time, I felt itchy and burning feet, frequent cramps, and numbness in my feet. Suspecting that the sandals contained a strange substance, I cut them in half with a knife and discovered a strange yellow liquid with a strong, pungent smell. When I inhaled it, I felt nauseous. Along with that, there were many small plastic particles inside the sandals.”
“I quickly contacted several people who were using these sandals, and I received similar expressions of concern. My neighbor said that her sandals, which she had only worn for a few days and hadn't even gotten wet, still had a cloudy yellow liquid oozing out when she cut them open…,” Ms. Thao added.

Similarly, Ms. Nguyen Duong (Xuan Dinh, Tu Liem, Hanoi) said that she had only bought these foam sandals a few days ago but had to reluctantly throw them away because she was worried about the strange substance inside affecting her health. “Like many others, I liked these sandals because they felt light and kept my feet warm. But after wearing them for a few days, I felt an itchy, tingling sensation in my feet, like being bitten by insects. Especially, my feet often felt numb when walking. I cut them open with a knife and found a strange, sticky substance inside with a strong, pungent smell. To get rid of the smell, I had to wash my hands many times…”
According to our reporter's observations, these sandals are made of flexible rubber, with a white sole, numerous small ventilation holes, and are labeled "Xibujia." The packaging is entirely in Chinese. These sandals, priced at 30,000 to 40,000 VND per pair, are widely sold in many markets.
At markets like Nghia Tan, Cau Giay, Co Nhue, and My Dinh, these sandals are piled up and displayed for sale both on the streets and at stalls inside the markets. Many shop owners say that this item is currently a "trend" among housewives this winter.
Mr. NVH (a vendor in the My Dinh area) said that he gets his goods from an acquaintance in Long Bien (Hanoi) and they are advertised as being imported from China. Because it's a friend's business, he didn't ask to check the invoice or the origin: "Since I started selling these sandals, I haven't received any complaints about the product quality, so I just display them like other items."
Ms. Hien (a street vendor in the Ho Tung Mau area of Hanoi) confirmed that this type of sandal has only appeared in Hanoi for the past four months.

Speaking to Dan Tri newspaper, a leader of the Hanoi City Market Management Department said that the agency had received information from citizens complaining about Chinese-made sandals suspected of containing a strange substance that could affect health. On the afternoon of January 5th, the Hanoi City Market Management Department launched an inspection and review of several businesses in Hanoi. In the near future, the unit will also cooperate with relevant agencies to clarify the suspicions about the strange liquid in these products.
