Tensions in eastern Ukraine continued to rise after armored vehicles bearing Russian flags were seen circling the town of Kramatorsk, where Kiev's interim government troops are carrying out an "anti-terrorist" operation launched by acting President Oleksandr Turchynov.

According to AFP, each unmarked armored vehicle had about 10 armed men sitting on top.

Meanwhile, a Guardian reporter at the scene said that separatist gunmen had captured five armoured vehicles and a tank from the Ukrainian army and were circling Kramatorsk to show off their victory.

Russian TV channel RT also confirmed the news, saying that the six military vehicles were transferred from the Kiev interim government to the "pro-federalization of Ukraine" side.

Hundreds of locals poured into the streets to welcome the convoy, honking their horns.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian military helicopters also hovered over central Kramatorsk, but there was no sign that the forces of the interim government in Kiev could retake the town from separatist protesters./.
