Following the memorial service for the 18 soldiers who died in the plane crash at Hoa Lac (morning of July 11), that same afternoon, Major General Nguyen Kim Cach, Deputy Political Commissar of the Air Defense - Air Force Command, stated that the aircraft experienced a malfunction due to a sudden loss of engine power.

According to Major General Nguyen Kim Cach, the Mi 171 helicopter that crashed in Hoa Lac was due to a malfunction.
Airplanes typically have two engines. If one engine fails, causing a sudden drop in power, the other engine will have to compensate for the loss of power.
However, in the case of the Mi 171 helicopter, because it had just taken off, it had not yet reached sufficient altitude and there was not enough time for the second engine to compensate for the power loss of the malfunctioning engine.
To overcome this problem, the principle is that power compensation is only truly effective when applied for a certain period of time and at a specific altitude.
Assessing the timing of the accident, Major General Cách stated that if the pilot had landed immediately upon encountering the problem, the aircraft might have been safe. However, because the plane was located in the middle of a market with a large population, landing there would have caused harm to many people.
"The pilot and crew attempted to fly the aircraft to a higher altitude to avoid densely populated areas. Upon reaching an open area with minimal damage to civilians, the aircraft was deemed unfit for landing and crashed, resulting in the tragic accident that claimed the lives of many soldiers," the Deputy Political Commissar of the Air Defense - Air Force Command explained.
Earlier, Lieutenant General Vo Van Tuan, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, stated that before the crash, the Mi 171 helicopter had only taken off a few minutes earlier and was in the process of circling to gain altitude.
Due to insufficient altitude, the soldiers were unable to deploy their parachutes to escape.
"You can't parachute if you haven't reached sufficient altitude. Just because you have a parachute doesn't mean you can jump whenever you want," Lieutenant General Tuan explained.
