Hospital amputated patient's leg due to misdiagnosis
Danh Sua fell off his bike and suffered an open fracture to his left leg. Doctors decided to put a cast on his leg, which caused his leg to become infected and gangrenous and had to be amputated after four surgeries.
On January 7, Dr. Truong Cong Thanh, Deputy Director of Kien Giang General Hospital, said that the hospital's leadership had received the petition from the family of patient Danh Sua and had directed them to review and clarify the complaint about the misdiagnosis that led to the amputation of the leg.
“For now, the expert panel has concluded that there was negligence in the initial examination and diagnosis due to the inexperience of the doctor on duty. Whether there was negligence or not needs further verification,” said Dr. Thanh.
Doctor Thanh also clearly affirmed the hospital leadership's stance of seriously learning professional experience from this very unfortunate case. At the same time, in the near future, they will direct a review to clarify the responsibilities of each relevant collective and individual for strict handling.

Mrs. Thi Lan next to her biological son Danh Sua who now has only one leg. |
According to the reflection of Ms. Thi Lan (residing in group 9, Thanh Binh hamlet, Thanh Loc commune, Chau Thanh district, Kien Giang), on November 30, 2013, her son Danh Sua (welder, 19 years old) forgot to put down the kickstand while riding a motorbike, so he fell and broke his left leg.
When taken to Kien Giang General Hospital for emergency treatment, the doctors here decided to put a cast on Mr. Sua's leg, causing it to become infected and necrotic, and had to amputate after four surgeries.
Ms. Lan explained that after putting the cast on the child overnight, the next morning, she cried out in pain so much that I asked the doctors to check it for her, but no one came to check.
On December 2, 2013, I saw blood and yellow liquid flowing out of the casted foot. I continued to ask the doctor to help me, and my child was taken for another x-ray. After the x-ray, the hospital immediately performed surgery.
However, on the morning of December 3, 2013, the doctors announced that they had to amputate most of my child's left leg because the infection was so severe that it could no longer be cured.
“Súa is the main breadwinner in the family. Now that he is like this, my whole family doesn’t know how to make a living. He is so young, only 19 years old, without a wife or children, and is already disabled… I just want to clarify the truth about why my son had one leg amputated to the thigh. Who is right and who is wrong must take responsibility,” said Mrs. Lan.
Sharing the family's frustration on January 6, the hospital leadership organized a delegation to visit and encourage the family of patient Danh Sua. At the same time, they invited Ms. Lan to the hospital to cooperate in verifying the negligence of the on-duty staff on December 1, 2013 as stated in Ms. Lan's petition.
"We are very sympathetic to the situation and the pain that the patient and his family are suffering. The hospital will certainly actively support Mr. Danh Sua to gradually overcome his difficulties," said Dr. Thanh.
