China bans rice imports from Vietnam
According to the rice website Oryza.com, Beijing has officially banned rice imports from Vietnam across the border (indirect trade) to increase tax inspections on Chinese importers. Rice traders in northern provinces of Vietnam said China ordered the ban because it found many Chinese traders evading taxes.
Beijing plans to impose regulations on all rice imports from Vietnam and set tariffs to make it easier to control. However, according to some Vietnamese rice traders, China banned the rice because demand for fragrant rice has decreased, and this is the type of rice that most Chinese traders buy through unofficial channels. Vietnamese traders say China's ban will not affect Vietnam's rice exports because demand from some countries, such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, is still very high and Vietnam does not depend on rice exports to China.
