The war in the Gaza Strip leaves over 700 dead - as seen from space.

An astronaut posted a photo taken from the International Space Station while flying over Gaza and Israel. The photo vividly depicts the worsening crisis that has claimed more than 700 lives.

German engineer Alexander Gerst captured images of rockets and explosions illuminating the night sky with streaks of yellow light from a distance of 220 miles from Earth.

His photo quickly went viral online when he posted it with the tweet: "The saddest photo I've ever taken. From the ISS we can see explosions and rockets flying back and forth between Gaza and Israel."

Approximately 10,000 people have shared this photo in an effort to put international pressure on the government to stop the bloodshed in Gaza.

The United Nations Human Rights Council said Israel “highly likely” committed war crimes in Gaza, where 715 Palestinians, including 165 children, have been killed in fighting. The Council also condemned the indiscriminate firing of rockets and mortars by Hamas militants into Israel, which killed 34 people.
