On August 1, US President Barack Obama had a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the situation in Ukraine. In it, Mr. Obama expressed "deep concern" about Russia's continued support for separatist forces and requested a diplomatic solution to defuse the conflict.

Mr. Obama also affirmed the US position in supporting the Ukrainian government in hunting down separatist gunmen. However, both Mr. Obama and Russian President Putin agreed that it is necessary to end the fighting in Ukraine soon to stabilize the situation.

After 10 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in fighting near the MH17 crash site, the Ukrainian government ordered a one-day halt to military operations to allow international experts to access the site.

The newly discovered bodies will soon be flown back to the Netherlands, according to the head of the international team, Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg. The team will then search the area near the town of Soledar, in the Donetsk region.
