(Baonghean) - In the recent university and college entrance exam, Quy Hop 1 High School had a 50% admission rate; among them were many ethnic minority students with difficult family circumstances. Notably, 40/40 students of class 12A of the school passed the entrance exam to prestigious universities. That is truly a miracle in this mountainous area...

Complete dream of university

We went to the house of Vi Van Tu from Phay village, Chau Quang commune (Quy Hop), a student of Quy Hop 1 High School who had just passed the entrance exams to two universities. The sun was already high in the sky, and the door was still tightly closed. Neighbors said that Vi Van Tu had just started school a few days ago, and Tu's mother, Lo Thi Thuy, came home late from work.

Waited for a while. After a while, Ms. Thuy also returned. Walking quickly, she quickly lifted the bamboo pole covering the gate to invite guests into the house. The two-room house had nothing valuable, but the neat study table placed against the wall seemed to light up thanks to the certificates of academic achievement of the two brothers Tu. The story of the poor student who had just "passed the gate" suddenly became lively, although the mother's eyes were red... Ms. Thuy's husband died when Tu was in first grade. She raised two young children alone, and both sides of the family were poor so no one could help. Luckily, both brothers Tu were good and studious. Although they had food sometimes hungry, sometimes full, and had no money to buy advanced textbooks, Tu was still an excellent student for many years in a row. In 12th grade, seeing his friends going to extra classes, the poor mother's heart ached again, partly because she loved her children, partly because she felt sorry for her fate.

Ms. Thuy recalls that during the time Tu was preparing to apply for the university entrance exam, she could not sleep a wink at night: “If I don’t let my child take the exam, I feel sorry for him. His parents’ lives are already hard, so why should I let him suffer like me? But if I let him take the exam, I need money. We don’t have enough to eat all year round, and whenever we need to spend, we rely on a few bags of rice, which we have already sold almost all of. Working for others is cheap, but you can’t just ask them to take it.” So, determined for her child’s future, Ms. Thuy borrowed a small amount of money from neighbors for Tu to take the exam. The day she heard that her son passed the entrance exams to both universities (Vinh Medical University and Bac Ninh University of Politics), Ms. Thuy was overwhelmed with joy and pride, but immediately, worry also came... Fortunately, thanks to the sharing of the community and the practical help of local organizations and unions, Tu had the opportunity to become a new student at Bac Ninh University of Politics.

Hoang Manh Linh, class 12A, Quy Hop High School, a poor student, passed two prestigious universities: the Military Medical Academy and Hanoi University of Science and Technology. But poverty almost extinguished Linh's dream of going to university. And then it was also her mother who strongly encouraged her to pursue her dream. Linh's father, Mr. Hoang Minh Chau, suffered a stroke two years ago. Despite intensive treatment, his health was very weak. All of his activities depended on his relatives. Since the day his father fell seriously ill, the already poor family became even more destitute. Linh herself wanted to drop out of school many times to stay home and help with housework to support her mother, but was encouraged by friends and teachers to continue going to class. And Linh went to school regularly and helped her mother take care of her father whenever she had free time. Overcoming difficulties, Linh achieved the title of excellent student for many years. Linh is one of the outstanding examples of poor students overcoming difficulties at Quy Hop 1 High School. Touchingly, since knowing that her son passed the entrance exams to 2 universities, Linh's mother - Mrs. Ho Thi Ha asked the construction workers in the village to let her work as a construction worker. The work is really hard, but the salary is higher to help her son continue his dream of going to university.

Tu and Linh have now temporarily left the mountains and forests to go to the city, becoming new students of major universities. But there are still difficulties and worries of poor mothers, and only with their extraordinary determination and willpower, can they help the dreams of such poor students to be fulfilled.

Enjoy a "crossing the gate of heaven" period...

In the recent university entrance exam, the 50% passing rate of students was a "jumping the gate" miracle for teachers and students of Quy Hop 1 High School. Sharing the joy with us, Mr. Cao Thanh Luu, Principal of the school said: The whole school has more than 50% of students passing the university entrance exam, of which class 12A has 40/40 students, class 12B has 30 students, class 12C has 25 students, class 12D has 20 students. In particular, the result of 100% of students passing the university entrance exam of class 12A is truly a miracle. Among the 40 students in the class who passed the university entrance exam, 37 students scored 20 points or more and were admitted to a number of prestigious universities such as: Hanoi Medical University, Military Medical Academy, People's Police Academy, National Economics University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, University of Construction, Academy of Finance... Some students had excellent achievements when they were admitted to two universities with very high scores such as Ho Viet Kien (27 points), Duong Minh Hieu (26 points), Vo Hong Nhung (25 points), Hoang Manh Ninh (25 points)...

Mr. Luu added: “The achievements today are the result of the tireless efforts of teachers and students. During the time of establishment and development, the school's leadership has always focused on developing and investing in the quality of each lesson, respecting the creativity in the teaching methods of teachers. Last school year, the school quickly grasped the innovation in teaching and testing methods. Determined to focus more on university entrance exam preparation because the graduation exam students can choose the subjects so it is very easy. Overcoming all difficulties in the lack of facilities, we strive to maintain the title of the leading flag in the work of "growing people" of the Education sector of Quy Hop district in particular and Nghe An province in general".

Emotional ferry trip...

Meeting Mr. Tran Ba Hai, homeroom teacher of class 12A, Quy Hop 1 High School, it seems that his feelings of joy and pride are still the same as the first day he heard the news that all the students in his homeroom class passed the university entrance exam. When talking about class 12A, he smiled proudly: "It is truly a warm home, everyone loves and protects each other, and studies well together." Mr. Hai recounted memorable memories of his beloved class 12A as the most wonderful "relief" after the busy days of "rowing the boat" of knowledge, which is the natural duty of teachers: "Every holiday and Tet, the students invite each other to my house to cook and make trouble. They always come unexpectedly, never inform me in advance and never leave before dusk." It seems to have become a tradition for generations of students in the natural sciences, playing hard and studying hard, class 12A not only studies well but is also very united, helping each other in studying and life. Each student has strengths in different subjects. Teachers must pay attention to dividing groups, dividing groups for students to study together to exchange and tutor each other. Some students who are worse at studying are tutored by good and excellent students. Thus, poor students have the opportunity to improve, good students also consolidate their knowledge. Compared to his classmates, Phan Anh Khanh is a student who studies worse, but with the tutoring and help of other students, Khanh has made remarkable progress. As a result, he was admitted to the University of Mining and Geology.

Not only do the 12A students help each other in their studies, they also help each other in life. Mr. Hai said: In the class, there are some students in difficult circumstances. Like Hoang Manh Linh, who asked to leave school many times to stay home to take care of his father and help his mother, but he was always encouraged and helped by teachers and friends. Each of his classmates donated at least 10,000 VND to support Linh. Mr. Hung and Ms. Ly, two Chemistry and Physics teachers who are also a married couple, donated 500,000 VND to Linh, and the homeroom teacher donated 300,000 VND. Even more touching is that Mr. Hai's former students, who have graduated, still called for and donated 100,000 VND to support Linh. This is a large amount of money for a difficult situation like Linh's family and is the motivation for her to overcome difficulties and study well.

To have 40 people with 40 different backgrounds and personalities get along with each other and help each other progress is a great effort to grasp and manage flexibly by the leader. For the students to grow up, the teacher must be dedicated, strict and close to the students. Talking about Son, the smart and individual student made Mr. Hai regret many times. Son studied very well, did his homework very quickly, and always wanted to be the first to finish his homework. In the provincial excellent student exam in grade 12, Son took part in 2 subjects: Math and Chemistry. During the Math exam, he submitted his paper when only 2/3 of the time was up. After leaving the exam room, Son called his homeroom teacher to discuss the exam questions and solutions. A moment later, he was startled to realize that he had made a mistake in the solution. As a result, he only won the Encouragement Prize in Math and the Third Prize in Chemistry. From then on, in the tests, the teacher always graded very strictly, whoever presented carelessly would be given a bad score. Son and his classmates seemed to understand what the teacher meant, so they all tried to present it neatly and carefully. At the end of each chapter and each section, the teacher gave 20 to 30 exercises for the students to do at home. At first, everyone complained, but gradually they got used to it. Class time was used by teachers and students to discuss difficult exercises. Although the curriculum was very heavy, the teacher still created a comfortable and joyful atmosphere in each class, helping students grasp knowledge quickly and effectively.

The story of the studious students of class 12A, Quy Hop 1 High School and their fathers, mothers and teachers is long, a touching story surrounding a memorable miracle of "passing the gate" of the university and college entrance exam in 2014 in the mountainous district of Quy Hop. And surely that story will be told forever, as a source of pride and motivation for the next generations of students...
