Air Algerie plane carrying 116 people lost contact

Algeria's aviation authority has lost contact with an Air Algerie plane en route from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso to Algiers.

The plane is believed to have lost contact about 50 minutes after takeoff, state news agency APS reported.

APS has not yet given details on the number of passengers on board flight AH 5017.

The incident occurred less than a day after an ATR-72 aircraft of Taiwanese airline TransAsia crashed with 58 people on board, killing 47 people.

Earlier, on July 17, a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 crashed while flying over Ukraine. All 298 people on board died. The plane was believed to have been hit by a missile fired from below.

According to Business Insider, an Algerian official told Reuters news agency that the plane was carrying 110 passengers and 6 crew members.

Latest information says this is an Airbus 320.
