According to AFP, on September 27, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the US of resorting to "military intervention" to protect its interests, referring to Washington's airstrikes in Syria.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Mr Lavrov said: "Washington has openly declared its right to unilaterally use force anywhere to protect its own interests. Military intervention has become a routine practice - even despite the sad consequences of all the military operations that the US has conducted in recent years."

The Russian foreign minister cited NATO's air campaign in Yugoslavia, the Iraq war, the campaigns in Libya and Afghanistan as examples of US-led military actions that he said led to "chaos and instability".

In addition, Mr. Lavrov continued to accuse the US and its allies of playing the role of heroes fighting for democracy but in reality "trying to decide for everyone what is bad and what is good".

Russia has sent “large quantities of military equipment and weapons” to Iraq, Syria and other Middle Eastern countries and will continue to provide military support, he said.

Regarding the situation in Ukraine, Foreign Minister Lavrov said that the country had become a victim of Washington's "arrogant policy", and affirmed that the US and the European Union had supported the "coup" that overthrew Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych last February.
