West Africa: 1,470 people died from Ebola

According to USA Today, on August 23, the World Health Organization (WHO) admitted for the first time that it could not accurately count the number of people infected with Ebola in West Africa because many victims were treating themselves at home and did not go to disease control centers for fear of being quarantined. Statistics at the end of August 22 showed that the number of victims who died from the Ebola virus in West Africa had skyrocketed to 1,470 out of 2,615 infected people.

WHO and the UN have pledged to redouble their efforts in treating Ebola to avoid the risk of the epidemic becoming uncontrollable. Mr. Keiji Fukuda, assistant to the WHO Director-General, affirmed that Ebola is a curable disease if detected early and treated promptly. Next week, WHO will announce a specific action plan to deal with Ebola in West Africa. WHO believes that countries preventing Ebola by closing their borders is not only ineffective but also directly affects humanitarian relief in countries with epidemic areas.
