Strengthening cooperation between the National Assemblies of Cambodia and Vietnam

At the invitation of National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, a high-ranking delegation of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia led by His Excellency Heng Samrin, President of the National Assembly, is paying an official visit to Vietnam from August 18-20.

On the afternoon of August 18 in Hanoi, right after the official welcoming ceremony, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung held talks with Mr. Heng Samrin. The two sides agreed to continue promoting comprehensive cooperation to contribute to building peace, stability and enhancing the role and position of each country's National Assembly.

At the talks, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung was pleased to welcome the high-ranking delegation of the Cambodian National Assembly to visit Vietnam after the two countries celebrated the 35th anniversary of the victory in the southwestern border protection war and the victory of the Cambodian army and people over the genocidal regime (January 7, 1979 - January 7, 2014).

National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said the visit demonstrates the special affection of the Cambodian National Assembly and people for Vietnam and is an important milestone contributing to continuing to promote solidarity and friendship between the two nations.

National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung highly appreciated the economic and political successes in Cambodia, and shared the difficulties and challenges that Cambodia is facing, especially hostile forces that are trying to divide the solidarity of the two nations.

National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung stressed that in that context, the two countries and the two National Assemblies must unite, protect achievements, as well as cooperate and support each other for sustainable development. National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung affirmed that the Vietnamese National Assembly and people will wholeheartedly support the Cambodian People's Party's line in building peace, unity, independence and development.

Appreciating the results and achievements of Vietnam in recent times under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the Government, as well as the National Assembly of Vietnam, National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin believes that Vietnam will continue to gain new victories. Heng Samrin affirmed that the socio-economic development achievements of Vietnam are also the achievements of the Cambodian people and hopes that the two sides will continue to cooperate and exchange trade to more than 2.5 billion USD as at present.

Overview of the meeting

Mr. Heng Samrin also informed National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung about the political, economic and social situation in Cambodia, including the National Assembly election in this country. The success of the election has helped Cambodia stabilize politically, especially the organizational structure of the National Assembly and gradually develop. Mr. Heng Samrin highly appreciated the support of the Vietnamese National Assembly and expressed his hope that the two National Assemblies will continue to strengthen cooperation and exchange experiences, especially in legislative work and delegation exchanges at all levels. Mr. Heng Samrin believes that the friendly and cooperative relationship between the two countries and the two National Assemblies will be forever green and sustainable.

The two National Assembly Chairmen agreed to continue promoting comprehensive cooperation, as well as strengthening solidarity and support in resolving common regional and global issues, contributing to building peace and stability, and enhancing the role and position of each country's National Assembly in the international parliamentary forum. The two sides are making efforts to build a sustainable ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). The two sides also agreed to continue implementing parliamentary cooperation activities.

On this occasion, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung respectfully invited National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin and the high-ranking delegation of the Cambodian National Assembly to attend the 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Vietnam in 2015.

Also this afternoon, at the Presidential Palace, President Truong Tan Sang received President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia Heng Samrin.

At the reception, President Truong Tan Sang welcomed the visit to Vietnam by the Chairman of the Cambodian National Assembly and believed that the visit would contribute to strongly promoting relations between the two countries.

Conveying his regards to the King and Cambodian leaders, the President expressed his delight at the positive socio-economic results that Cambodia has achieved, contributing to improving the lives of its people. This affirms the wise leadership of the King and the leaders of the Cambodian State. With the important results achieved, Cambodia's role in the region and the world is increasingly affirmed.

The President affirmed that Vietnam always supports the prosperous Kingdom of Cambodia and is an active member of ASEAN. He suggested that the two sides strengthen cooperation in the fields of education and health; raise two-way trade turnover to 5 billion USD in 2015, and closely coordinate and support each other in regional and international forums.

The President believes that under the leadership of Mr. Heng Samrin, the Cambodian National Assembly will enter a new stage of development with many new successes.

Thanking the President for taking the time to receive him, National Assembly President Heng Samrin expressed his satisfaction with the good development of the two countries' diplomatic relations in many fields. Informing the President about the activities of the Cambodian National Assembly in the coming period, including the advantages and difficulties that need to be overcome, Mr. Heng Samrin thanked Vietnam for its great support, especially in the past in liberating the Cambodian people from the genocidal regime, and now in building the country in many fields including: infrastructure investment, human resource training, humanitarian assistance...

The National Assembly Chairman believes that in the context of regional integration and the current political situation in Cambodia, the relationship between the two countries will continue to be maintained and developed. The Cambodian National Assembly Chairman emphasized that Cambodia always considers Vietnam a friend, a brother, a good neighbor in all periods; affirming that the historical solidarity between the two peoples will continue to develop.

Congratulating Vietnam on its recent achievements, considering them as Cambodia's own successes, the National Assembly Chairman believes that under the wise leadership of the Party and State, Vietnam will achieve even greater successes in the future.
