On Iraqi state television, Mr. Maliki confirmed that he would hand over the Prime Minister's seat to his successor Haider al-Abadi. Accordingly, Mr. Maliki will remain in power for the next 30 days until the new Iraqi President completes the appointment of a new government.

In recent days, Mr. Maliki has been under pressure to give up power. The US and neighboring countries, including Iran, have supported a solution to appoint a new Prime Minister to end the ethnic conflict in Iraq. There were reports that Mr. Maliki would stage a coup after mobilizing special forces and tanks to advance into Baghdad, but in the end, the Iraqi Prime Minister chose the bloodless path.

In addition to announcing his resignation, Mr. Maliki also stressed that the extremist Islamic State militants are posing a greater threat to Iraq. "I announce today that a new government will be formed, my resignation will bring my brother Haider al-Abadi to become Prime Minister."

During his eight years in power, Mr. Maliki used strong measures to fight terrorism and coups. Experts say that Mr. Maliki's resignation will end eight years of internal division in Iraq when the Iraqi Prime Minister's government caused deep ethnic conflicts.

New Prime Minister Abadi is considered a more moderate person and has repeatedly declared that he will compromise to bring Iraq back to stability and peace soon.
