NHK (Japan) reported that storms and heavy rains since the beginning of the week have killed at least one person and injured more than 30 others.

Super typhoon Halong hit western Japan on the morning of August 10, bringing heavy rain to Honshu, the country's most populous main island, and causing the meteorological agency to raise the alert to the highest level, meaning it could threaten human life and cause major property damage.

Typhoons and heavy rains since the beginning of the week have killed at least one person and injured more than 30, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK. Local authorities have issued evacuation advisories for more than 1.6 million people, mainly in western Japan.

Super Typhoon Halong's winds of up to 162km/h caused the cancellation of more than 200 flights to Japan on August 10. Some high-speed train services were also suspended, leaving many passengers stranded as many were enjoying the Obon holiday.

The weather agency said that super typhoon Halong is continuing to move towards the North-Northeast of Japan at a speed of about 30km/h. The Tokyo Metropolitan Area is one of the areas that could receive up to 40mm of rain./.
