Reality TV: Singing, dancing... all kinds of tricks but still single

August 21, 2014 23:00

The public no longer waits until the weekend to see their favorite contestants or listen to the judges "slash each other". Simply because they are fed up.

Remember when Dancing with the Stars - the Vietnamese version of Dancing with the Stars set foot in Vietnam, the production unit Cat Tien Sa set a new record for reality TV ratings and an unimaginable record for advertising prices up to that time. It is estimated that customers had to pay more than 100 million for less than 1 minute of advertising in the middle of the program.

Thành công bất ngờ từ Bước nhảy hoàn vũ 2010 là tiền đề cho sự nở rộ truyền hình thực tế tại Việt Nam
The unexpected success of Dancing with the Stars 2010 was the premise for the boom of reality television in Vietnam.

Dancing with the Stars was so successful that it created a dancesport movement from North to South, with the birth of a series of dance centers. Judge Khanh Thi herself admitted that the program helped her dancesport center become famous and the number of students increased rapidly.

After Dancing with the Stars, Cat Tien Sa took advantage of the opportunity to import The Voice with a new name, The Voice of Vietnam. The Voice of Vietnam also quickly established the number 1 position, defeating Vietnam Idol and pushing Sao Mai - Diem Hen - VTV's "own child" out of the golden channel VTV3.

Riding on the momentum, Cat Tien Sa imported The Voice Kids - The Voice Kids, and once again drowned out its rival Do Re Mi with 6 years of experience. However, Cat Tien Sa's honeymoon did not last too long.

The Voice Kids season two was a media failure. Although the contestants were still talented, although 3 out of 4 chairs were replaced by the most powerful figures in terms of expertise, although Quoc Trung's profound humor surpassed Tran Lap's gentleness and Hong Nhung's sharp wisdom "surpassed" Ha Ho's hyperbole, the show was still much "fatter" than the first year. The Voice Kids season two is ongoing, with many potential names such as Hoang Anh, Thien Nhan, Thien Nham... but for some reason the press is not interested.

Dancing with the Stars has long been unanticipated by viewers. The audience may miss Ngo Thanh Van, but few will remember Ngan Khanh and Thu Thuy - the two singers who were recently crowned.

It was thought that The X-Factor - The X Factor, a brand new program, would help the producers save the situation. In reality, the audience's interest in the program was too little. On an online forum, people even shared that if they watched it, it was only to admire the beautiful dresses worn by Ho Ngoc Ha.

With so many reality TV shows competing with each other, every producer wants to find the most unique and unusual shows to bring to Vietnam in order to attract audiences. But the harder they try, the more distant their expectations become.

Two dance playgrounds for children, Dancing with the Stars Kids and Youth Dance, have to share a small audience. The challenge with the dance that made a strong impact on the profession also had to accept a decrease in ratings after the second season. Vietnam's Got Talent paused for a year before restarting, but no one guaranteed success. The winner is - I am the winner using Hoai Linh as MC also did not attract much more attention than the first season.

The trick of using hot characters to increase the show's ratings is not always effective. Hoai Linh and Tran Thanh, although two famous faces, just breathing a sentence will make the news, but "Drinking too much weak wine will make you drunk/ A smart person, no matter how good he talks, will be boring". Tran Thanh went from The Mysterious Person to The Challenge of Dancing with the Stars to Youth Dance. Hoai Linh went from The Mysterious Person, Familiar Face to I Am the Winner. No matter which channel you turn on at any time, you will see them, but the audience cannot be excited for long.

Hoai Linh - Tran Thanh are not capable enough to save the show's ratings because they are too familiar to the audience.

Need a moment of silence for the audience

The massive attack of reality TV shows not only makes the audience distracted but also makes them feel overwhelmed. The MCs and judges are familiar, even the contestants are familiar with each other. They just met this contestant on Do Re Mi, the next day they saw him on The Voice Kids; another contestant just appeared on Vietnam's Got Talent and appeared on The X-Factor; or another contestant just left Sao Mai-Diem Hen and set foot on Vietnam Idol, left Vietnam Idol and went to The Voice, left The Voice and went to The winner is. The playgrounds are forced to share a group of potential contestants with each other because where can we find enough talent to supply nearly ten programs each year on a national scale?

Producers must have realized this long ago, but are stuck in finding a solution. Ratings are their bread and butter, if they don’t make quick money, where will they get the capital to go long term? Furthermore, the goal of quality is always put behind the goal of commercialism, this is not only the reality of Vietnamese entertainment television but also the general reality of television technology in the world.

Some investors are more agile, they are looking for popular shows in new fields, not singing and dancing anymore, like cooking (Masterchef), adventure travel (Amazing Race), different formats and no contestants. However, how to turn the producers' rice pots into pho for the audience is still an open question. Maybe we should give the audience a hungry meal so they can come back to more delicious rice dishes?
