“All countries must abide by international law and resolve territorial disputes peacefully. That is the way to help the Asia-Pacific region thrive,” Obama stressed in his speech at the UN General Assembly on September 24. The US President also reaffirmed his commitment to the US strategy of “pivoting” to Asia to counter China’s growing military and economic power. “The United States has been and will continue to be a Pacific power, promoting peace and stability in the region,” Obama said.

Previously, last February, Mr. Daniel Russel, US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia, asked China to adjust its unreasonable "nine-dash line" sovereignty claim in the East Sea to comply with international law, especially the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Sharing the same view, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also believes that China must comply with the law in maritime disputes. In an interview with CNN on September 21, Prime Minister Modi said that China wants to be connected to the world and therefore Beijing will have to accept global rules in maritime disputes with neighboring countries. According to Mr. Modi, in the current era of partnerships, all parties must seek and expand mutual support. China fully understands that it must accept global rules and must play its role in cooperation and moving forward if it does not want to be isolated.
