AirAsia to pay $124,000 in compensation to each QZ8501 victim
Singapore's Straits Times newspaper on January 8 quoted CNN as saying that AirAsia will compensate 100,000 USD for each passenger of the ill-fated flight QZ8501, in addition to the initial payment of 24,000 USD.

Thus, the total compensation for each victim will be 124,000 USD.
Shortly after AirAsia announced the initial compensation, some families of the victims rejected the offer due to lack of further information about compensation and confusion over the names of the passengers.
In another development, aviation insurance companies will be responsible for compensating 1.25 billion rupiah (equivalent to more than 110,000 USD) for each passenger, and an additional 315 million rupiah to 750 million rupiah (equivalent to 25,000-60,000 USD) for 25 passengers who purchased flight insurance.
However, there are also reports that the insurer may not be liable for compensation after it was revealed that AirAsia did not have a license to fly the Surabaya-Singapore route on the day of the crash.
Flight QZ8501, carrying 162 people, lost contact with Jakarta air traffic control after taking off from Surabaya en route to Singapore on December 28, 2014.
The search and rescue campaign has lasted 13 days, but as of January 7, rescue forces have only found 41 victims./.
