“We have found six victims, including four women and two men, all adults,” SB Supriyadi, head of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, said Thursday. Supriyadi said the search team found six people strapped to their seats among the plane’s debris.
The bodies will be flown to PangKalan Bun, the city with the closest airport to the search area. So far, only 59 of the 162 people on board have been found. Authorities say bad weather has made the search difficult. As of Thursday, Supriyadi said, the strong currents in the area where the plane crashed prevented divers from reaching the fuselage.
Over the weekend, after intensifying searches in the shallow waters of the Java Sea, a warship discovered the fuselage of the Airbus A320-200 on the seabed in the area. The plane’s black box was also recovered and sent to investigators to help determine the cause of the crash.
The cause of the crash was revealed a few days later. On Tuesday, Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan said that according to the data retrieved from the black box, the crash occurred because the plane was flying too fast before landing and then broke down in the sea. The Airbus A320-200 was also facing very bad weather at the time.
December 28 became the darkest day in the history of Air Asia when the Airbus A320-200 disappeared from the radar screen half an hour after takeoff. It is known that the plane departed from Surabaya city carrying 162 passengers to Singapore. However, this plane was never able to complete its journey again.
