Mr Gorbachev added: "I cannot say for sure that the Cold War will not become 'Hot'. I am afraid that there may be dangers."

“Today we continue to hear about sanctions against Russia from the United States and the European Union. Are they mistaken? The United States has completely lost its way and is dragging us along,” he told Interfax news agency.

Mr Gorbachev added that the gap between the West and Russia was "too big. And, unfortunately, it is not narrowing. Instead, it is growing even more!"

Gorbachev has also criticized the West in the past for what he calls its short-sighted policies on global issues. Gorbachev said the crises in the Middle East and Ukraine demonstrated the West's inability to solve global problems.

He added that tensions between world powers had led to instability on a global scale, blaming Western countries, especially the United States.

Russia is the target of US and EU sanctions over allegations that Moscow supports opposition forces in eastern Ukraine. Russia has always denied these allegations. The two regions of Donetsk and Lugansk in eastern Ukraine have been the scene of fierce fighting between opposition forces and Ukrainian government troops.

According to the United Nations, the death toll in the Ukraine crisis has exceeded 5,000, with more than 10,000 others injured./.
