What's new on the next generation BMW 5 Series?

Some information about the next generation 5 Series (codename G30) has been revealed by insiders, of which the most interesting are the 2 new 518d and M5 versions.

Like the upcoming new 7 Series, the G30 5 Series will use the new "35up" chassis platform developed by BMW for its three strategic sedan lines. Thanks to the use of lightweight materials in manufacturing such as aluminum, high-strength steel and even carbon fiber, the 35up chassis will help the new 5 Series reduce about 80 kg in weight (the exact number depends on each different version).

In particular, the M5 sports version will even have a weight reduction of up to 180 kg compared to the current generation. The M5 G30 will continue to use the current 4.4l turbocharged V8 engine, but with an increased capacity of 600 horsepower, similar to the M5 "30 Jahre Edition" version that BMW recently produced in limited quantities. Rear-wheel drive is still standard equipment, but in addition, BMW will also offer the option of 4-wheel drive on the new M5 for the first time.

At the bottom of the range, the entry-level 518d will be powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine that produces 150bhp and consumes an impressive 3.88l/100km. The 5 Series will also be available as a hybrid.

In BMW's recently leaked 2015 product launch plan, the 5 Series G30 is not on the list. Therefore, the car will definitely be "reserved" by the company to launch in 2016 with 3 body styles: sedan, touring and GT.
