More than 9 tons of hazardous waste were seized by the Environmental Police.

At around 3:00 p.m. on December 18, on National Highway 1A in Quan Bau Ward, Vinh City, the Environmental Police Department of Nghe An Province discovered a truck with license plate 37S-9631 traveling from Vinh to Dien Chau, driven by Khong Van Tuan (born in 1988), residing in Quang Trung Ward, Vinh City, carrying 9.4 tons of used lead batteries. This type of waste is on the list of toxic chemicals, and can only be traded and transported with a hazardous waste management license and must be transported by specialized vehicles.

However, when checking, driver Khong Van Tuan, who was also the owner of the goods, could not present documents proving the origin, invoices, and permits for transporting hazardous waste as prescribed. All of the batteries were purchased by Tuan from other places at a price of nearly 15,000 VND/kg, and then transported to Dien Chau for consumption.

According to the authorities, some people secretly collect and smash used batteries to get the lead to melt, collect the plastic to sell, and dump the acid water into the environment. When the lead is melted, the slag will be filtered into raw lead, which will be melted again and become refined lead and reused. This seriously affects the living environment as well as public health.

The police are continuing to investigate.
