International driving permit is used in 85 countries
The international driving permit will be available in English, French, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese, clearly stating what type of vehicle the holder is allowed to drive.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Huyen, Director General of the Roads Department, this agency has completed the Circular guiding the issuance of international driving licenses, submitted it to the Ministry of Transport for approval, and is expected to be implemented from the first quarter of 2015.
Accordingly, this type of driving license is issued according to international standards in the form of a booklet similar to a passport, and is legally valid in 85 countries participating in the 1968 International Convention on Road Traffic and the Convention on Road Signs and Signals (Vienna Convention).

This driving license will be displayed in English, French, Russian, Spanish and the language of the country that issued the license, used in most European countries and 5 Southeast Asian countries: Vietnam, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia. In addition, the license also clearly states what type of car or motorbike the holder is allowed to drive, the general term of the license according to the convention is from 1-3 years.
According to Mr. Huyen, international driving licenses are issued to Vietnamese citizens in need and the procedures are simple, similar to the current driving license issuance. In the near future, the issuance of this type of license will be piloted at the General Department of Roads, cities with high demand such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, then it will be expanded nationwide.
It is expected that the fee for issuing an international driving license will be the same as the fee for issuing a new material license (PET) at 135,000 VND. At that time, Vietnamese people using an international driving license when participating in traffic in countries participating in the Vienna Convention will not need to register in advance with the traffic management agency in that country.
