According to unofficial figures, the Vietnamese community in Berlin has about 40,000 people and is the largest East Asian community in the German capital.
As in many other cities, the Vietnamese community is always appreciated by local authorities for its good integration and contributions to development in Germany.
Bild newspaper reported on March 1 that after Turks (1,134 cases) and Poles (407 cases), the Vietnamese community in Berlin has the third highest number of people acquiring German citizenship, with 287 cases.
Of the total 6,539 foreigners living in Berlin who were naturalized as German citizens in 2014, the largest number were in the Mitte district, while the Lichtenberg district, which has the largest Vietnamese population in Germany, had only 333 cases of foreigners naturalizing as German citizens.
To obtain German citizenship, a person must meet a number of conditions such as having lived legally in Germany for 8 years (3 years in the case of being married to a German); passing an exam on understanding German law, society and culture; being able to support themselves; having sufficient knowledge of German; accepting German law...
The fee for naturalization is 255 euros for adults and 51 euros for children. Normally, the time to consider an application for German citizenship is 6 months, but in some cases it can take several years.
Mr. Igor (31 years old) is a special case, with the time to receive German citizenship certificate in just 87 days.
The young man from Serbia first worked as a hotel cleaner, then moved to work at Burger King and a year later moved to work at the German national railway company Deutsche Bahn.
Igor answered 32 out of 33 multiple choice questions correctly. Igor's waiting time to apply for citizenship was only 3 years because he was married to a German.
To date, Igor is the fastest case of successful naturalization in Berlin/
