Wrestler beats referee at 2014 National Congress

December 4, 2014 15:06

Le Duy Hoi (Can Tho team) attacked referee Nguyen Dinh Hung right on the field.

The incident occurred in the wrestling event at Thai Binh Provincial Gymnasium after the men's 66kg match between Bui The Anh (Hanoi team) and Ngo The Sao (Army team). At the end of the match, the Hanoi wrestler won the gold medal, but the Army team affirmed that a point-winning move by Ngo The Sao was not recognized by referee Nguyen Dinh Hung.

Believing that the Thanh Hoa referee blew the whistle, wrestler Duy Hoi and coach Xuan Thai jumped down from the stands to attack the referee team.

While playing for the Can Tho team at the 2014 National Sports Festival, Duy Hoi is actually an athlete from the Army delegation, and instructor Xuan Thai is also the Head of the Wrestling Department of the Army Sports. Due to the above uncontrolled actions, Duy Hoi was stripped of his right to compete, while coach Xuan Thai was banned from directing at this year's Festival.

Head of the Wrestling Department (General Department of Sports and Physical Training) Nguyen The Long shared with VnExpress: "Immediately after the collision, the Wrestling Organizing Committee suspended athlete Duy Hoi as well as coach Xuan Thai and sent a written report to the Technical and Professional Subcommittee of the Congress. The Congress Organizing Committee will have a final handling of this issue."

For the second time in his career, wrestler Le Duy Hoi attacked the referee on the mat out of frustration.

Mr. Long also added: "There has never been a precedent of athletes chasing and beating referees in domestic tournaments. However, wrestler Duy Hoi personally beat a Korean referee at the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand."

On December 8, 2007, Duy Hoi met Kwannai Surachet in the men's 74 kg category. Before the match, the host country asked for a gold medal in this category and even threatened, but Vietnam did not agree. As a result, Duy Hoi was blatantly pressured, especially by the Korean referee team, leading to a humiliating 1-3 defeat.

Too frustrated, the wrestler found and kicked the referee, forcing security forces to intervene. After watching the video of the match, the President of the Asian Wrestling Federation and the organizing committee apologized to the Vietnamese delegation, but asked Duy Hoi to accept the result for the overall success of the SEA Games in Thailand.
