This is one of the efforts of the regional and international community to help West African countries deal with the Ebola epidemic.

The African Union (AU) Commission announced on November 1 that it will deploy more medical and relief workers to the Ebola outbreak area in West Africa within the next week. This is one of the efforts of the regional and international community to help West African countries such as Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia cope with this deadly virus.

The African Union's chief coordinator for Ebola relief, Raji Tajudeen, said the team of medical and relief workers includes more than 50 members from six African Union countries, including epidemiologists, clinicians, public health experts and health communication staff. The volunteers are still in training.

“These are volunteers from all over Africa. This training will equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to respond appropriately to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa,” said Mr. Tajudeen.

Before leaving for the mission, a Ugandan volunteer shared: “I worked in a hospital where Ebola had appeared. I was there from the time it was first discovered until it was cleared without contracting the deadly disease. So I am confident that whether I go to Guinea, Sierra Leone or Liberia, I will survive and return and encourage other health workers to go and help West African countries.”

The mission operates under the African Union Support Mission to West Africa (ASEOWA). The African Union sent its first Ebola response team to West Africa in September and now has more than 150 health and aid workers in three countries in the outbreak area.

The African Union’s support mission will help Ebola-affected countries strengthen their national response mechanisms and coordinate with the international community in this life-and-death fight by mobilizing technical experts as well as political and financial support. African Union Commission Chair Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma stressed that the “Black Continent” is making every effort with the international community to stamp out the epidemic./.
