Unique vegetables used as ornamental flowers for Tet (Vietnamese New Year)
Instead of being sold by the kilogram for a little over ten thousand dong, products like round red radishes, purple cabbage, or kohlrabi... are placed in decorative pots for Tet (Lunar New Year) and are valued at millions of dong.
This year's flower and ornamental plant market is very diverse. Besides traditional apricot and peach blossoms, or imported flowers such as American apricot blossoms or Korean and Taiwanese phalaenopsis orchids, various vegetables are also being grown into potted plants, which are very popular with customers.
1. Red beet

This type of tuber is popular for consumption or as a decorative plant during Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), due to its bright colors and belief that it brings good luck in the coming year. This unique "ornamental plant" comes in various price ranges, depending on the shape of each pot, from 100,000 to 200,000 VND. Large, round, and beautiful ones can cost up to 700,000 VND.
"Nowadays, not only do consumers like to buy potted red mustard greens to display during Tet (Lunar New Year), but even traders are pleased that the products sell out as soon as they are released onto the market. Only the less attractive pots sell slowly," said a shop owner in Hanoi.
2. Cabbage

Equally popular as vegetables, ornamental cabbage is a favorite choice for many consumers this year. Even couples in love are using small, brightly colored potted ornamental cabbages as gifts. These plants come in two varieties: purple and white, priced at around 90,000 VND. Including the pot, the price ranges from 140,000 to 200,000 VND.
3. Kohlrabi

Instead of selling kohlrabi at 15,000 VND per kilogram, this year, many growers are transforming it into ornamental potted plants for Tet (Lunar New Year). Symbolizing the bringing of wealth and prosperity to the home, two pots of kohlrabi are selling for 70,000-120,000 VND.
Ms. Hoa, the owner of a flower stall in Can Tho, said that this year she experimented with growing kohlrabi in pots and it was well-received by customers, yielding better profits compared to mass cultivation for food. "The advantage of this variety is that after Tet, customers can stir-fry it and the bulbs will still be fresh and delicious," Ms. Hoa said.
4. Ornamental papaya

These bonsai trees have appeared on the market in the last two years. Although not new to consumers, their symbolism of prosperity and abundance makes them a popular choice. The price of a pot ranges from 1 to 4 million VND. Some trees with beautiful shapes and abundant fruit can cost up to 10 million VND per pot, and they still find buyers.
