Treating asthma with belladonna, a person in critical condition
(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of November 5, Doctor Vu Ngoc Lan, head of the emergency resuscitation and anti-poison department of Nghe An General Hospital, said that he was treating a patient, Nguyen Dinh Toan (38 years old, in Thach Son commune, Anh Son district), who was poisoned by drinking belladonna juice.
Previously, according to the victim's family, Toan had sinusitis. After many days of treating the disease with traditional medicine, such as using thinly sliced, dried, burned and inhaled belladonna, it did not work. Thinking that if he boiled the water and drank it, he could recover faster, so at noon on November 3, Toan picked some berries, boiled them and drank the water. Unexpectedly, a few minutes after drinking, he was poisoned.
When the family discovered it, they immediately took the patient to the district hospital and then transferred him straight to Nghe An General Friendship Hospital for emergency treatment on the evening of November 3. He was in critical condition, severely agitated, struggling, suffering from hyperadrenergic syndrome, hot, red skin all over his body, dilated pupils and completely unconscious. After being admitted, the patient was given IV fluids, antidotes and activated charcoal was pumped into his stomach to inhale and absorb the toxins and then excrete them.
After more than 4 hours of emergency treatment, the victim gradually regained consciousness and was out of danger. Currently, the patient can sit up, eat well and can be discharged in the next few days.
According to Dr. Vu Ngoc Lan, if poisoned by belladonna, if not treated promptly, it can easily lead to respiratory failure and death.
