"Two suspects were detained today in connection with this crime. They are Anzor Gubachev and Zaur Dadayev," FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov told state television.

Both suspects are from the Caucasus region, Mr. Bortnikov said.

"The necessary investigative process and procedures are continuing," the FSB head said.

The killing of Mr Nemtsov, with four bullets in his back as he walked with his girlfriend along a bridge near the Kremlin in Moscow last Friday, shocked Russia.

The 55-year-old politician served as First Deputy Prime Minister under late President Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s.

Current President Vladimir Putin has called the assassination a "provocation" aimed at humiliating Russia, and vowed to bring the "disgusting and cynical killers" to justice.

The assassination of Mr Nemtsov has also sparked speculation, including about Russia's role in the Ukraine crisis, or the attack on the Charlie Hebdo newspaper office in Paris in January.

Therefore, the arrest of suspects related to this murder by Russian security agencies is expected to soon help stabilize the situation and put an end to baseless rumors.
