Some breast cancers linked to silicone breast implants detected
The French National Cancer Institute (INCa) said on March 17 that scientists from this agency have found a clear link between a rare form of breast cancer in women and breast implants using silicone implants.
INCa said that since 2011, 18 women have been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called ALCL (anaplastic large cell lymphoma).
ALCL is a type of non-Hodginal lymphoma that involves anaplastic large lymphocytes. The disease occurs when cancer cells form cysts around implants in the patient's mammary gland structure.
Fourteen of the 18 cases of the rare cancer ALCL occurred in women who had breast implants from the US pharmaceutical company Allergan.
However, the company asserted that it always puts "patient safety as its top priority," and said that Allergan worked closely with health authorities and the French ANSM Medicines Agency during the breast implant process for patients.
Faced with the above information, French Health Minister Marisol Touraine immediately reassured those who had breast implants and emphasized that complications from breast implants causing the strange cancer ALCL are very rare.
Previous scientific studies have also shown that people who have had breast augmentation surgery are three times more likely to develop breast cancer than those who have not had breast implants.
Researchers believe that breast implants create shadows on X-rays, which can hinder the vision of experts in detecting breast tumors. As a result, early detection of tumors is easy to miss, reducing the patient's chance of survival.
According to ANSM statistics, about 400,000 French women have had breast augmentation surgery, 80% for cosmetic reasons and 20% as a result of breast cancer./.
