Skipping breakfast increases the risk of diabetes

Scientists confirm that skipping breakfast when young will increase the risk of diabetes in later life.

A British study found that people who skipped breakfast every day as young adults were at increased risk of insulin resistance, a factor in most cases of type 2 diabetes in adulthood.

Scientists from the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Glasgow and St George's London followed more than 4,000 primary school children aged 9-10, monitoring how often they ate breakfast and how much they ate. The results showed that children who skipped breakfast had more blood markers associated with a higher risk of diabetes than children who ate a full breakfast. Not eating breakfast means the body cannot respond adequately to the hormones that regulate blood sugar metabolism.

"Many follow-up results show that children who regularly eat breakfast with foods rich in fiber and cereals will fight the risk of diabetes," the study revealed.

Dr Angela Donin, head of research at St George's College, University of London, also said: "In the UK, there are currently about three million people thought to have type 2 diabetes, which is mainly related to lifestyle and obesity. The disease occurs when the body is resistant to insulin or does not respond to enough hormones needed to metabolize blood sugar, leading to symptoms of fatigue. Diabetes can also cause blindness, kidney failure, and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke."

According to Dr Alasdair Rankin, research director at the charity, more research is needed to better understand the harmful effects of skipping breakfast and its relationship to the development of type 2 diabetes.
