The White House statement said that during his visit to Kenya in July, Mr. Obama will attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) in this East African country.
During much of Obama's time as US President, several Kenyan leaders were indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), including President Kenyatta, who was accused of involvement in the 2007-2008 post-election violence.
President Obama will meet with Mr. Kenyatta, according to an unnamed White House official.
The United States has previously raised concerns with the Kenyan government about restrictions on human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The official affirmed that Mr. Obama's visit "will create another opportunity for dialogue with the government and civil society on these issues.
Mr. Obama has visited Africa four times since taking office, but has never been to Kenya, where he still has relatives.
President Obama's background has caused much controversy in the country.
Some hard-line political opponents argue that Mr. Obama was not born in the United States and is therefore not qualified to be president. Mr. Obama’s allies say the accusation has racist overtones./.
