Indonesian media reported on December 28 that a plane was found crashed off the east coast of East Belitung Island after information that AirAsia flight QZ8501 was missing.

The Bangka Post (Indonesia) news site quoted Mr. Yuhinu, an Indonesian military officer, as saying that "an Airbus crashed off the coast of Belitung Island".

Bangka Post also added that there is still no information on the exact location of the plane crash.

“We are coordinating and collecting information from fishermen and boats passing by the coast of Belitung Island,” another Indonesian official told the news site.

Bangka Post also quoted former Indonesian Navy Colonel Iwa Kartiwa as saying he had read news reports about a plane crashing off the coast of Belitung, but according to Mr. Kartiwa, this information has not yet been verified.

Budget airline AirAsia said on December 28 that one of its planes flying from Indonesia to Singapore was missing, according to AFP. An Indonesian transport ministry official, Murjatmodjo, told Reuters that flight QZ 8501 had requested to fly at a higher altitude to avoid clouds before it went missing.

The plane took off from Surabaya city to Singapore and lost contact with air traffic control, Indonesian media quoted Hadi Mustofa, an official from the Indonesian Ministry of Transport, according to Reuters.

Mr. Mustofa said that flight number QZ 8501 of low-cost airline AirAsia lost contact with Jakarta air traffic control (Indonesia) at 6:17 a.m. (local time) on December 28.
