Public Security Forces proactively respond to climate change

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of April 8, the Ministry of Public Security held an online conference "Summary of climate change response, natural disaster prevention and search and rescue work in the Public Security Forces in 2014 and deployment of work in 2015". Lieutenant General Bui Van Thanh, Deputy Minister, Head of the Steering Committee for Climate Change Response, Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of the Ministry of Public Security chaired the conference. The Nghe An bridge was chaired by Colonel Nguyen Dinh Dung, Deputy Director of the Provincial Police.

In 2014, with the attention and regular direction of the Government, the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention, the National Committee for Search and Rescue, the National Committee on Climate Change and the leadership of the Ministry of Public Security; the close coordination between ministries, branches, localities and forces, the work of responding to climate change, preventing natural disasters, floods and storms, and search and rescue in the entire Public Security force had many positive changes, proactively and effectively dealing with natural disasters, accidents and incidents.

The police of local units across the country have proactively developed and implemented plans and organized drills, exercises and training on response to natural disasters, floods and storms in accordance with the geographical characteristics of each specific locality; the sense of responsibility and command and management capacity of the police leaders at all levels have been raised; information and propaganda work has been promoted to raise awareness and sense of responsibility among the people and police officers about the task of preventing and mitigating natural disasters.

In Nghe An, tornadoes, hailstorms, and thunderstorms in 2014 killed 7 people; caused the collapse and severe damage to 53 houses, blew off the roofs of 852 houses; sank 2 boats; damaged nearly 14,250 hectares of agricultural production area; and damaged 25 items of irrigation works and other infrastructure.

Thanks to the initiative in flood and storm prevention and search and rescue work, Nghe An Police has promptly advised the Party Committee and government, closely coordinated with relevant departments, branches and functional agencies when natural disasters and storms and floods occur; promptly and effectively deployed search and rescue work.

At the conference, the Ministry of Public Security awarded certificates of merit to 21 groups and 2 individuals with outstanding achievements in natural disaster prevention, flood and storm prevention and search and rescue in 2014.
