The Sunrise 689 hijacking incident: "We're so glad to have made it back here."

According to crew member Tran Van Lich, he still can't forget the moment the pirates stormed in, threatening all the crew members on board with guns and knives. He didn't think he would survive to see his family again. Today, having returned from the brink of death, he couldn't hide his emotion at receiving timely assistance from Vietnamese authorities.

Crew member Tran Van Lich said: “When we were attacked by pirates, I was very scared. Everyone was just panicking and running away. Everyone else was attacked with guns, but I was attacked with a knife. We are very grateful and happy that the forces of our country came to support the Sunrise ship.”

When the pirates attacked, they destroyed all the equipment, making it impossible for the Sunrise 689 to determine its coordinates and direction during the hijacking and on its way back to Vietnam. All the food and valuables were also stolen. At that time, the hope of survival and returning home was very slim for all the crew members. Therefore, when Vietnamese authorities arrived to rescue and tow the Sunrise back to shore, everyone was overjoyed beyond words.

Captain Nguyen Quyet Thang said emotionally, "We are very grateful to the forces, especially the Coast Guard, for helping, guiding, and encouraging us. Without the Coast Guard, we wouldn't know where to go. The crew is very happy right now. We're so glad to have made it back here."

Currently, the crew members are in good health, and those injured are receiving timely care. Onboard, the crew members have been instructed to record the events of the incident to aid in the investigation. The Command of the Coast Guard Region 3 has also quickly coordinated with the Police, Border Guard, and People's Procuratorate of Ba Ria Vung Tau province to collect evidence at the scene, fingerprints, and conduct professional procedures to identify and clarify the robbery of the Sunrise 689 vessel.

Colonel Le Xuan Thanh, Commander of the 3rd Naval Region Command, said that the crew members would soon be reunited with their families: “They are very happy to have escaped the pirates and returned safely to Vietnamese waters. They hope to see their families as soon as possible in the next few days. Currently, we are trying our best to implement the fastest operational measures to ensure the crew members can return to their homes.”
