The shooting forced authorities to lock down the Capitol for several hours. Witnesses told US television that the suicide left some people, including children, in shock.
At the time of the incident, the Capitol Hill area was crowded with tourists coming to see the cherry blossoms. Along the US Capitol building, there are many cherry blossom trees in full bloom.
Capitol Police said the man who killed himself was carrying a backpack and a suitcase. Experts were called in to check the suitcase and backpack, but found nothing suspicious.
NBC News quoted a US official as saying that there was “no indication” that this was a terrorist incident. After the suicide bomber’s luggage was checked, the blockade was lifted.
