Hidden enemies in food

May 1, 2015 16:17

Hidden behind bunches of vegetables, pieces of meat, fish... are many enemies of health, namely bacteria, toxins, molds, additives...

Lack of knowledge about hygienefood safety, lack of conscience of sellers... consumers are facing many dangers due to using unsafe food. Understanding the hidden enemies in food is also a very good way to prevent diseases.

Bacterial and toxin infections

Depending on the level of infection, users may suffer from digestive disorders or death (such as Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Clostridium botulinum poisoning). During the upcoming days of April 30 and May 1, due to increased demand for food, combined with hot weather, the poisoning situation will be more serious if food is not processed or preserved properly.

Additives

To make food more colorful, preserve it for a long time and increase its deliciousness, people use additives. These additives, if of poor quality or using industrial additives, or substances that are not allowed to be used, will be very harmful to health, such as causing cancer. This harm progresses silently but surely, so the level of danger is even higher.

Pesticides

The leading health hazard is pesticide residue in food. If the pesticide residue is small but used regularly, it will gradually cause poisoning, leading to cancer and liver damage. If the pesticide residue is too much, it will lead to acute poisoning and even death.

Parasitic infection

Meat, seafood and some vegetables often contain intestinal parasites such as roundworms, pinworms, toxoplasmosis, liver flukes, allergies... If you eat foods contaminated with these parasites, you will have abdominal cramps, vomiting or diarrhea after a few hours... there are even cases of death due to severe allergies.

Mold

Food that has been left for a long time, not preserved properly... is a very favorable condition for mold to grow and develop. Among the toxins from fungi, aflatoxin is a group of toxins commonly found in foods for livestock or humans such as cereals, corn... and especially peanuts that have been left for a long time and become moldy. This toxin is resistant to heat, penetrates food provided for animals as well as for humans, affects the liver and combines with hepatitis B virus to increase liver cancer and acute liver tumors.

Heavy metals

The most toxic is food contaminated with mercury, in this case seafood. Due to the phenomenon of toxic accumulation, mercury is not eliminated from the body but continues to increase with the amount of food supplied each day, resulting in neurological disorders (tingling pain, loss of muscle tone, motor coordination disorders, reduced vision, hearing...) giving rise to a new disease called Minamata syndrome.

Nitrite

Nitrite is dangerous because it inhibits the oxygen-carrying activity of red blood cells.

In addition to avoiding choosing contaminated or toxic foods, housewives should also avoid the following easily toxic foods:

Cassava and bamboo shoots:These are two foods that contain hydrocyanic acid, a very strong poison that can cause rapid death... if not prepared properly. To prevent this, do not eat cassava that has turned green or brown. Before boiling, peel off the skin and cut off both ends, then soak the tubers in water for a while to dissolve the hydrocyanic acid into the water. Boil until boiling, open the pot lid to let the acid vapor escape. If it tastes bitter, do not eat it. The way to prepare fresh bamboo shoots is similar: peel off the skin, soak in water for a while and boil thoroughly (remember to open the lid when boiling to let the acid evaporate).

Mushroom:Mushrooms are foods rich in protein, fat, minerals, and fiber. They are also processed into many delicious dishes and are often present at parties. However, if you eat poisonous mushrooms, the consequences are unpredictable: stomachache, vomiting, convulsions, and can lead to death. Therefore, it is best to only eat mushrooms that we know by name, and eliminate strange mushrooms, especially mushrooms with bright colors.

Toad meat:Toad meat is very nutritious, but it is also poisonous if not prepared properly. Toad latex, eggs, bile, liver and skin contain the deadly poison bufotoxin. You should limit eating toad meat. If you do eat this food, you must clean it, remove the head, 4 legs, peel off the skin, do not let the slime stick to it, cut open the belly and remove all the organs. Wash the toad meat under running water to remove all remaining toxins.

Puffer fish:This is a very poisonous fish, so it should be completely removed from the menu.

Beetroot:Contains a lot of nitrate-nitrite, so it is very easy to cause poisoning. When poisoned by beetroot, the patient will have cyanosis all over the body, difficulty breathing, coma, and unconsciousness.
