Time's editor-in-chief, Nancy Gibbs, will announce "Person of the Year" on NBC's Today Show today. Time will also share this information on its Twitter and Facebook accounts.
The "Person of the Year" award has been presented annually by the American magazine since 1927. Eight of the most prominent figures are chosen by editors as those who have had the greatest influence on journalism over the past year, whether positively or negatively.
According to Time, in addition to President Putin, the list also includes many other prominent figures such as Apple CEO Tim Cook and pop star Taylor Swift. Protesters against racial discrimination in Ferguson, USA, and doctors caring for Ebola patients were also nominated.
US President Barack Obama and Pope Francis have respectively won the title of "Person of the Year" in the last two years.
Time readers can also vote for their own "Person of the Year." This year, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had only recently taken office, won the category thanks to his large domestic support base.
Modi garnered over 16% of the nearly 5 million votes from readers. Protesters in Ferguson came in second, while student leader Joshua Wong of the Hong Kong protests ranked third.
