Ondo State spokesman Kayode Akinmade said the disease, which includes symptoms of headaches, weight loss, vision loss and loss of consciousness, causes death within 24 hours of falling ill.

However, apart from the 17 deaths, there have been no new cases of the disease in the past 72 hours, no patients are being treated, and the disease has not spread beyond Ode-Irele.

On the other hand, experimental results have ruled out the possibility that the Ebola virus or any other virus causes the strange disease.

According to Mr Akinmade, blood and urine samples of two patients and cerebrospinal fluid sample of another patient have been sent for testing at the University Teaching Hospital Lagos, while local investigations are still underway.

Several government and humanitarian officials and health experts, along with epidemiologists from the World Health Organization (WHO), have been in the town of Ode-Irele to monitor the situation.
