Thanh Yen Secondary School was established in September 1966. In the first school years when the school was newly established, the staff consisted of 3 classes and the number of students in each class was only about 50 to 60. After 3 years of operation, in January 1969, implementing the policy of the Central Party and the Government, Thanh Yen and Thanh Luong communes merged and were named Yen Luong commune. From then on, Thanh Yen Secondary School was also merged with Thanh Luong Secondary School and was named Yen-Luong Secondary School.

After that, along with many historical changes, Thanh Yen Secondary School changed its name many times, but the school still maintained its title as one of the leading schools in Thanh Chuong district in terms of teaching and learning results. There were periods when Thanh Yen Secondary School was a common home for primary and secondary school students from many communes such as Thanh Yen, Thanh Luong, Thanh Khai and from here, many generations of students grew up...

In 2009, faced with the increasingly degraded state of the school's facilities, the work of rebuilding the school began to be focused on standardization. However, having identified the local conditions and circumstances, the school carried out the work step by step with sweat, effort, thrift and saving of resources, with contributions from the people, and investment from the State. By early 2010, after being invested in building new, spacious 2-storey classrooms, the school community was determined to aim for the goal of building a school that met national standards; that was also to meet the long-standing aspirations of the people in the area.

The project, after being approved, demonstrated the will and determination to improve the education work of the Party Committee, the government, the people and Thanh Yen Secondary School. The implementation process encountered many difficulties, especially the issue of staff quality, improving the quality of education and developing facilities. However, depending on each stage, the school has proposed very specific measures, plans and steps. In particular, every year the school has teachers attend seminars to improve the quality of teaching and learning. Since the policy of building a standard school was established, cadres and teachers have been more aware of their assigned tasks and responsibilities, studying, practicing professional skills, improving their skills and considering this as one of the contents to carry out the campaign "Each teacher is an example of morality, self-study and creativity".

Over the years, the school has also constantly innovated and improved the quality of education, first of all improving the quality of mass education. Responding to the industry's "Two No's" campaign, the school has developed a specific plan and seriously implemented it, resolutely pushing back negative phenomena, striving for real teaching, real learning, fairness, objectivity, and seriousness in evaluating and classifying teachers and students. That is, the school's teaching staff has 100% qualified qualifications (of which 91% have qualifications above the standard), 100% of teachers have professional qualifications, 77% of teachers have achieved the title of excellent teachers at the district level, 1 excellent teacher at the provincial level.

Regarding the quality of education, in recent years, the quality of teaching, learning and education of the school has made steady strides, the quality of key subjects and the quality of general subjects are always in the top of the district. In the 2014-2015 school year alone, the school had 2 excellent students at the provincial level (200% compared to the previous school year), 35 excellent students at the district level (134% compared to the previous school year), 65 students achieved high results in the key subject quality assessment exam for grades 6, 7, 8 (103% compared to the previous school year), and 5 students won prizes in the English exam via the internet.
