Do not use periodic test scores to classify primary school students
On December 25, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has just sent an official dispatch to the Directors of Departments of Education and Training regarding the direction of periodic assessment according to Circular No. 30/2014/TT-BGDDT regulating the assessment of primary school students.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Education and Training requested that the Departments of Education and Training direct the Departments of Education and Training and local primary schools to continue to innovate management work, reduce administrative procedures and records, strengthen the organization of professional activities to create conditions for teachers to focus on professional work, continue to get used to innovation, share ways of commenting, guiding and supporting students in the learning and training process.

At the same time, the Departments of Education and Training must propagate and explain so that teachers and parents understand and perceive correctly about periodic tests: Periodic tests are corrected by teachers, commented on strengths, suggested limitations of students and are scored. The scores of periodic tests are not used to classify students or to compare one student with another, but mainly for teachers and parents to verify the regular comments and assessments of students' learning process during the semester and school year. If the results of periodic tests are not consistent with the regular comments and assessments, teachers need to review and find out the reasons so that they can adjust their teaching methods, guidance and help students; students can retake another test to determine the actual capacity of students or the effectiveness of the educational solutions that have been applied.
To gain experience for setting questions and guiding periodic tests at the end of the 2014-2015 school year and the following years, the Ministry of Education and Training requested the Department of Education and Training to select 5 periodic tests for the first semester/subject/class of 5 local primary schools and send them to the Ministry of Education and Training (Department of Primary Education) in January 2015.
