According to teacher Dau Hoang Hung, Hoang Anh Tai's homeroom teacher, he comes from Do Luong district and comes from a rather difficult family background. His mother is a kindergarten teacher in Yen Son commune, Do Luong district, and his father suffered from a serious illness and passed away when he was in 10th grade. However, with exceptional determination, he won second prize in the recent national excellent student competition and was one of eight students from Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted specializing in Mathematics to participate in the second round of selection for the 2015 International Mathematical Olympiad.

Thus, with 4 students participating in the Asian and International Student Excellence Competitions, this is the year Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted has the largest number of students participating in international and regional competitions ever.
