On the final day of the Challenge Cup held in Varna (Bulgaria), the Vietnamese female gymnastics player caused a surprise.

Phan Thi Ha Thanh participated in the balance beam final (taking place on the evening of May 9, local time) with the belief that she will be in the medal competition group. That is completely reasonable, because last March she won a gold medal in a similar event at the Challenge Cup held in Qatar.

This time, Ha Thanh met again with her opponent Kim Un Hyang (DPRK). This is the person who defeated Ha Thanh in the balance beam final at ASIAD 17 to win the gold medal.

At the end of the performance, Ha Thanh achieved 14,200 points, thereby ranking first. Kim Un Hyang only got 13,867 points. The bronze medal belonged to the Swiss athlete. Before that, Ha Thanh competed in the women's vault event but only performed one jump and did not achieve a high result, in order to save her energy for the balance beam event.

In the men's event, Le Thanh Tung also surprised everyone with a bronze medal in the vault event, after averaging 14.700 points over two jumps. Another Vietnamese athlete in this tournament, Dang Nam, finished fourth in the finals of the rings (14.933 points) and vault (14.500 points). Pham Phuoc Hung also participated in the tournament but did not compete successfully.
