Through public questioning in court, Nam's criminal behavior was clarified: due to following his friends, Nam became addicted to drugs. To have money to serve his drug cravings, Nam accumulated money to trade drugs. Having a previous relationship with a Laotian named Ca Po (address unknown), on August 28, 2014, Quang contacted Po to buy two cakes of heroin for 12,000 USD. After receiving the "goods" from Po, Nam hired a motorbike taxi to take him home. When he was almost home, he was caught red-handed by the authorities.

At the trial, Nam confessed honestly and repented for his crimes. The presiding judge stated that recently, drug crimes in the border area have been on the rise in the province, and that severe punishments should be applied to deter and prevent crimes in general. However, in this case, Nam had many mitigating circumstances, and after consideration, the panel sentenced Nam to 20 years in prison.
