The Taliban brazenly attacked the Afghan parliament building.

On June 22, Taliban forces launched a suicide bombing campaign and attacked the Afghan Parliament building in the heart of Kabul, causing chaos throughout the city.

According to Reuters, a Kabul police spokesperson said a Taliban member detonated a suicide bomb just outside the parliament building. Several gunmen hiding in a nearby building then opened fire. At least 19 people were injured, including four women.

Television showed scenes of thick black smoke and dust billowing from the parliament building. Police revealed that all Afghan MPs had been safely evacuated. MP Shukria Barekzai recounted, "The whole building shook from the explosion, many windows shattered."

The fighting is still ongoing. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the group attacked the Afghan parliament building because the Kabul government was holding an important meeting there to introduce the new defense minister.

Observers believe the Taliban's easy assault on the parliament building in central Kabul raises concerns about the capabilities of Afghanistan's NATO-trained security forces. Violence has been erupting repeatedly in the country since the withdrawal of foreign forces last year.

The Taliban have been continuously launching large-scale attacks in several provinces. Today, the Taliban seized a district in Kunduz province. Prior to this, they had controlled another district in the same province.
