On the afternoon of July 21, Cho Ray Hospital announced that it had successfully performed the first organ transplant from a donor with cardiac arrest.

This is also considered the first case of organ donation and transplantation from a cardiac arrest donor in Vietnam.

At Cho Ray Hospital, yesterday (July 20), a rare organ transplant was performed in Vietnam from a brain-dead donor after a work accident. The patient's organs could save the lives of up to 6 people with incurable diseases. The patient's kidneys and liver were transplanted to save 1 case of liver cancer and 2 cases of end-stage chronic kidney failure.

Notably, yesterday, the patient's heart and lungs traveled more than 1,000 km to Hue Central Hospital to perform a heart transplant to save the life of a patient with heart and lung failure who is being treated there. In addition, the patient's corneas will be used to transplant to two other patients. This can be considered the most multiple organ transplants in Vietnam to date.

Previously, the organ donation and transplant from another cardiac arrest donor was performed on June 18. The donor was a patient who suffered a stroke leading to a brain hemorrhage and was predicted by doctors to have cardiac arrest within the next 12 hours.

After being persuaded by doctors, the patient's sister agreed to let her brother donate his organs to save people. After the patient's heart stopped completely, doctors performed surgery to remove and transplant the patient's two kidneys to save the lives of two patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure who were undergoing dialysis. Currently, the health of the two kidney transplant recipients is stable, of which one has been discharged from the hospital.

Doctor Du Thi Ngoc Thu, Head of the Human Organ Transplant Coordination Unit at Cho Ray Hospital, said: “To have such a transplant, all departments in the hospital must coordinate and work all night to get the fastest test results because blood pressure can drop very quickly. When taking organs, we must be on time, counting every minute. Everyone works in a tense spirit”./.
