Britain will reopen its embassy in Iran this weekend.

(Baonghean.vn) - Britain will reopen its embassy in Tehran this weekend, nearly four years after protesters stormed the embassy building and burned the British flag, a British diplomatic source told Reuters on August 20.

A source, who requested anonymity because official information on the matter has not yet been released, said: "Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond will travel to Iran to reopen our embassy there."

Following the nuclear agreement between Iran and the group of six major world powers, including the UK, Mr. Hammond expressed hope that Iran's embassy in Tehran would reopen soon.

British Foreign Secretary Hammond will travel to Iran this weekend to attend the official opening ceremony of the embassy on Sunday (August 23). He will bring a small group of business leaders with him, according to diplomatic sources.

Until the new ambassador is appointed and announced, the embassy will be run by Ajay Sharma, currently the non-resident chargé d'affaires.

Iranian protesters stormed two British diplomatic buildings in Tehran in November 2011, smashing windows and engaging in other acts of defiance against sanctions imposed by London on their country.

At the time, Britain argued that the incident could not have occurred without the permission of the local authorities, responding by closing its embassy in Iran and expelling its diplomats.
